How do you communicate science?

A quick look at the visual content we have been producing for the ERC Scarlet, a project that brings together our three units: design and communication, European cooperation, and education and knowledge in the field of textile fibres.

Estúdio Ofício recently won a contract for Nova FCT ERC SCARLET project communication strategy, which includes the visual identity, editorial design, platform design, and the written and visual content across the project’s different channels.

On this project, we draw on the expertise we have built up across the areas we work in: Ofício’s creative direction, design and marketing, Saber Fazer’s in-depth textile knowledge, and our mothership Barbot Bernardo’s experience with the complexity of European cooperation and research projects.

Communicating science comes with its own challenges. It means translating a research process without losing rigour, for different audiences: scientific peers, partners, the textile community, young people and students, curious minds and society at large.

It also often calls for the ability to synthesise, shaping complex ideas into just a few steps without leaving out anything important, and delivering them to multiple platforms, from social media to blog posts, from podcasts to YouTube.

Working collaboratively with the project’s researchers through a comprehensive monthly plan, we develop the themes, copy and visual content, aligned with a communication strategy divided into different categories and objectives, spanning both the short and long term.

With a well-defined, but ever evolving visual identity in place, we keep developing and expanding its possibilities as the project moves forward.

You can read more about this project and get to know this and other design cases on Ofício’s website.
